In 1922 Syracuse played Penn State at the Polo Grounds and Syracuse-based Bainbridge Badges and Buttons made a button “Orange Special.”
Merchant Bank of Syracuse made slogan buttons for home games, neutral site games, and bowl games from 1987 to 1992, according to newspaper articles from that time. Burger King made buttons in 1993 and Wal-Mart / M&T Bank made them in 2004, according to newspaper advertisements. There are basketball (men’s and women’s) and lacrosse games. Men’s basketball has both game-by-game slogans and season specific buttons. There is no mention of a button program before 1987 or after 1993 (except 2004) and articles are clear that 1987 was the first year of the program.

In 2004 M&T Bank, which had purchased Merchants Bank I believe, teamed up with Central New York Wal-Marts and the Children’s Hospital to do slogans for 2004 home games with a public slogan contest. As far as I can tell, the program did not continue the next season.
